Powers, responsibilities and partnerships

This course concentrates on the Board’s most central tasks and deals with working relationships between the School Board and the Head Teacher, the education authority and parents; gives details of the normal functions of a School Board and tackles some of the basic problems which a School Board might face. The course was reviewed in 2001 following the introduction of “How good is our School 2000” and the “Standards in Scotland’s Schools etc., Act 2000”. £3

The Effective School Board at Work
This course covers the three components of effective communication, some of the barriers to communication and a possible network for communication. It also covers why a message is sent and how that message is best communicated. The second part of the course covers the purpose of holding meetings, the factors which combine to promote the effectiveness of meetings and the skills required in Chairing a meeting. £3

Appointment of Senior Staff
By completing this module you should be able to interpret the main selection and recruitment procedures in appointing senior school staff, appreciate the need for confidentiality in all aspects of appointment interviewing, understand the role of various personnel involved, cover discrimination, construct interview questions based on job and person specifications, and plan effective structured interviews. £3

Head Teachers and their School Boards
A new course for Head Teachers which has been successfully piloted in Dumfries and Galloway and Renfrewshire. Produced at the request of Head Teachers and aspiring Head Teachers which should form part of the requirements for the new Head Teacher qualifications. The opportunity of identifying that you have been working with parents as para-profssionals as opposed to working with parents on an individual basis. £3
