Andrew Mellor Biography
Manager, Anti-bullying Network

Andrew Mellor is in the unusual position of being a teacher with 25 years experience who has credibility as a researcher and developer. He conducted the first substantial research on bullying in Scotland and was a member of the Advisory Committee which oversaw the development of the first Scottish anti-bullying pack - "Action Against Bullying", published by SCRE.

He wrote a booklet offering advice to families (published by SCRE and now in its second edition), and the Scottish Office leaflets for pupils and parents.

As Anti-Bullying Development Officer from 1993 to 1995 he played a major role in highlighting the seriousness of bullying in schools and contributed to a large number of workshops and conferences within Scotland. He has published widely on the topic of combating bullying.

In 1995 a report by Mr Mellor entitled ‘Which Way Now? - A Progress report on Action Against Bullying in Scottish Schools" was published and distributed to all schools. He is now regularly invited to contribute to seminars and conferences across the UK and internationally.

He is currently involved in the development of a training manual on ‘Improving the Learning Environment in Schools through Anti-Bullying and Discipline Strategies’ as part of a three year French/Irish/Scottish project under the EU’s Comenius Action 3.1 programme.

In April 1999 he left his post as Principal Teacher of Guidance at Dalry School in Galloway to become Manager of the Anti-Bullying Network, which is a Scottish Office funded service based at the University of Edinburgh.
